Emotional Support Animal (ESA)
An Emotional Support Animal (ESA) letter is a document written and signed by a licensed mental health professional (such as a therapist, psychologist, or psychiatrist) that confirms an individual has a mental or emotional disability and that their animal provides essential emotional support to help alleviate symptoms of that condition.
-
Why Someone Might Need an Emotional Support Animal (ESA)
An Emotional Support Animal (ESA) provides therapeutic comfort to individuals living with emotional or mental health challenges. While ESAs are not required to be specially trained, their presence alone can offer meaningful relief and support to those coping with psychological or emotional difficulties.
-
Here are some common reasons a person may need an ESA:
Mental Health Conditions
An ESA can be beneficial for individuals diagnosed with conditions such as:
Anxiety disorders
Major depressive disorder
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Panic disorder
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Social anxiety or isolation
Bipolar disorder
Housing Accommodations
Under the Fair Housing Act (FHA), individuals with a valid ESA letter may be permitted to:
Live with their emotional support animal in housing that typically does not allow pets
Avoid pet deposits or fees associated with housing

Your 5-Step Journey to Getting an ESA Letter
Step 1: Complete a Confidential Intake Form
Begin by filling out our secure and confidential intake questionnaire. This helps us understand your emotional and mental health history, your current symptoms, and how an Emotional Support Animal could support your well-being. The cost of this assessment is $100.Step 2: Schedule a Virtual Assessment
Once your form is submitted, you’ll schedule a telehealth appointment with a licensed mental health professional. This is a safe space to discuss your needs, explore how an ESA might help, and ask any questions.Step 3: Clinical Evaluation
Your clinician will conduct a thorough mental health evaluation, reviewing your emotional health and determining if you meet the criteria for an ESA under the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5).Step 4: Receive Your ESA Letter (If Approved)
If the clinician determines an ESA would benefit your mental health, you will receive a legally valid ESA letter—typically within 24 hours. This letter can be used for housing accommodations under the Fair Housing Act.Step 5: Continued Support (Optional)
Your mental health is important. If you’d like ongoing support, therapy services, or a letter renewal, we’re here for you. You’re not alone—and we’ll be here every step of the way.
